Health Information Management - Registered Health Information Technician-HIM

The Registered Health Information Technician (RHIT)-Health Information Management (HIM) sequence is designed for a special group of students—those who have a current RHIT certification and are graduates of an accredited college program in health information technology.

All Health Information Management courses will be delivered online via distance learning.

Health Information Management (HIM) professionals play a critical role in managing the collection, maintenance, and analysis of the medical data that healthcare professionals rely on to deliver, manage and finance quality patient care. Health Information Management is a profession that combines health data, information technology and management. HIM professionals play a critical role in collecting, maintaining, and analyzing the health data that healthcare professionals rely on to deliver, manage and finance quality healthcare.

In addition, they receive the training necessary to assume managerial positions related to these functions. RHIAs interact with all levels of an organization clinical, administrative, financial that employ patient data in decision making and everyday operations.

To transfer into this program, students must hold an applied associate degree in Health Information Technology (HIT), be a Registered Health Information Technician (RHIT), and have completed a minimum of the communication, math, and science categories of general education. After completing three courses in the online sequence, students earn 33 hours of proficiency credit from their associate degree program toward the B.S. degree.

Illinois State's preferred filing period for fall transfer students is September 1-January 15. For the spring semester, the preferred filing period is from April 1-August 1. You are encouraged to apply early in the preferred filing period for best consideration for admission into competitive majors. Visit the Office of Admissions to apply.

  • While no coursework is required, students must have RHIT certification.
